Today’s snippet is from Slay Ride, book three in the Holiday Corner cozy mystery short read series. The local sheriff, Frank Lawson, stops into his favorite diner and has a little fun with a new waitress.

Frank Lawson was determined to solve the murder of Gavin Foster. Never one to shirk from hard work, he delved deeper. While he hadn’t let on to Mandi Winter how seriously he took her evidence, it had swayed him. But he still wasn’t one to jump to conclusions, he always took it slow before charging someone until he was positive he had identified the guilty party.

He reached down and patted Tank on the head but that wasn’t enough for the pup who then rolled onto his back for some belly rubs. He received them with a happy whimper. “C’mon tank, let’s go grab some food while my brain tries to untangle this mess.” Hearing the word food, the pup jumped up and followed Frank.

Normally only service dogs were allowed in the Dash-in Diner, but since Tank was technically a working dog in training, he was allowed. Frank picked a booth, snapped his fingers and pointed underneath the table. Tank crept in and stretched out, promptly falling asleep.

A barely out of her teens waitress came over. She was a new face to him. “What can I get you, Sheriff?”

“Frank, please.”

“How many hot dogs?”

“No, just call me Frank.”

She giggled. “Okay, Frank. What would you like?”

“Ham and cheese on rye with a side of chips, please.”

“Drink?”

“Every now and then.”

She giggled again. “I mean, what would you like to drink?”

“Iced coffee, two sugars.”

She gasped. “Iced coffee this time of year?”

He laughed. “Naw, I just wanted to see your reaction. Hot coffee and I’ll sugar it.”

Shaking her head, she walked off to put in his order.

Frank reached down and scratched Tank’s head. “Gotta break them in early, right?”
