This is a serialized story – be sure to read in order: from A (afterthought) to Z (zealous).

Courtney didn’t rush to meet up with Nash. He was always late, so she knew she had plenty of time. As she got ready, she thought back over their history. They had met in their freshman year of college, dated a couple of times, but ended up as friends. When there was a breakup, they both knew who they could go to for a good talk and a shoulder cry, if needed.

When Nash wanted to join some friends and form a band, she was their cheerleader. As they grew a following, she became their manager and booked all their shows. When Courtney wanted to change majors, Nash encouraged her to go with her heart and she switched from a B.A. program in English to a double B.A., one in Journalism and the second in Criminal Justice.

When Nash finally passed the bar, after multiple attempts, he opened his own office after no one would hire him for their firms. Five years later, he was deemed an ambulance chaser. But worse than that was his taking on disreputable clients that were supposed drug dealers. Any friends he might have had, slowly drifted away. His parents had all but disappeared from his life as well.

Courtney hadn’t cut ties completely, believing he was a good person regardless of the type of clientele he represented. “I wonder what he’s gotten himself into this time,” she mumbled as she struggled with her buttons. She rubbed her shoulder, still painful after encounter with a recalcitrant suspect. She laughed as she remembered his shock at being taken down by a five-foot, two-inch woman.

She grabbed her wallet, pushing it deep into a front pocket, then slid her phone and pistol into the belt bag under her blazer. Pulling her hair into a ponytail she smiled. No one expected her to be a private investigator but she loved it.

To be continued…

  1. I love contrasting the some of the words you are using for the letters in comparison to my word…Bleeding and Disappear vs Bold and Delicious… Two different books Yours definitely have the “mystery” edge! Bold and Delicious sound like a soap opera!
