Today’s snippet is from An Elfing Mess

I hate Christmas. Off-key carolers, tacky yard displays surrounded by gaudy lights, schmaltzy romance movies, all topped off with nasty sugar-laden cookies. No, I’m not the Grinch or even Scrooge. I just hate the holidays, starting with Thanksgiving and continuing on to Valentine’s Day.

So why was I driving to the most holiday-themed town in the state? Because my Aunt Sheri had asked for my help.

Snowflake Falls was located in the coldest, most northern part of the state. Even in the middle of summer, it was rarely warmer than 70 degrees. “I’ve got warm clothes and she needs me,” I reassured myself. “I can do this. I mean, it’s only four, no five, well, maybe six weeks.” I looked in my rearview mirror and pasted a smile on my face as I gritted my teeth and muttered, “I can do this.”

“This is just merry-ho-ho-ho great. Not!” I glared at my car now perched precariously on the edge of the road, one front tire hanging over a ditch and the other front tire proudly displaying its currently acquired state of FLAT. I dragged my tote bag out of the passenger seat and slammed the door. The car jiggled. “No! Don’t you dare.” This is what I was reduced to, talking to an inanimate object, like that would make any difference.

I pulled my cell phone out of the bag and punched the buttons. Nothing. “Argh! No service, that figures.” I looked around, nothing but snow-covered trees and the road stretched out in front and behind me. “Guess I’d better get walking.” I looked down at my shoes and sighed. They definitely weren’t made for walking.
