Today’s random prompt is “Create a character who can communicate with the earth.”
I took a little liberty with this one and pulled out an old piece of flash fiction that I thought might fit and adapted it to a photo I found.
“Ya’ see that? Yeah that, over there.” The wizened old man cackled as his only friend, a yellow battle scarred tom cat, meowed in return. His cataract obscured vision wasn’t a deterrent, he’d waited for this day for longer than he could remember. He didn’t need his eyes to confirm what his senses told him.
The cat yowled once more, jumped off his lap and wound himself around his legs. The man held out his arms and the cat leapt into them, purring with pleasure as he scratched the cat behind the ears.
“Ya’ ne’er thought this day would come, did ya’?” He threw his head back and crowed with delight.
In the distance, the cloud of swirling matter sparkled in the afternoon sun and moved toward them. To the untrained eye, it looked like a dirt devil, kicked up by the breeze. But he knew better. This was his destiny, the path to a new future.
