Today’s random prompt is “Make this your setting: a hot air balloon.”

It was the perfect fall day for most anything outdoors. The air was crisp and fresh-smelling. The trees were decked out in bright fall colors. And the sun was rising in the sky with few clouds to obscure it.

“Are you sure about this?” Becca asked her boyfriend, Ray.

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

“I thought you had a fear of heights.”

He blushed. “Just when I was little. You know, on those high bridges. This is different.”

“Different how?”

“I don’t know, it just is.”

“Well, if you’re sure…” Becca grabbed her coat and scarf out of the back seat. “Better bundle up.”

“I’ll be fine. I’m never cold,” he bragged.

“Whatever you say. The brochure said to wear something warm.”

Ray held up his hand. “I’m fine. Let’s go, I don’t want to be late.”

The two walked hand in hand to the staging area where two other couples stood waiting with the crew. The pilot greeted them. “Welcome aboard, everyone ready?”

Six heads bobbed up and down.

“Then it’s time to board. Well, almost. First we have our safety briefing.”

Ten minutes later, the pilot and six passengers climbed into the basket of the hot air balloon.

As they rose, Becca watched Ray for any signs of problems with the height. He smiled back at her and gave her a thumbs up.

Fifteen minutes later, they were soaring over the landscape with everyone oohing and aahing over the views.

That is, everyone but Ray who was crouched in the bottom of the basket, shivering, with his arms wrapped around his knees.

Becca had no sympathy for him. “Quit sniveling. I told you to bring a jacket.”
