Letter M

This is a serialized story – be sure to read in order: from A (afterthought) to Z (zealous).

“I can’t believe this!” Courtney was at the exact spot where Nash first read the message that sent them searching but the room was well lit instead of dark. She walked to the wall where they found the engraving. “You idiot, you read it wrong.” She traced the letters, but they started to melt and reform under her fingers. She snatched her hand back. “What the…?”

As soon as she lifted her hand, the letters stopped moving. She started to retrace them and once again, they shifted. This time she kept her hand there until they stopped. Where the previous message had been 2RTHN3L, it now read 1LTHN2R.

She closed her eyes and repeated it, committing the instructions to memory. “1LTHN2R, 1LTHN2R, 1LTHN2R.” When she opened her eyes, the message had disappeared, leaving a blank wall. She shrugged, nonplussed by anything at this point.

“Okay, heading to my first left. No more stinky garbage room. Let’s do this!” She walked less than a dozen steps before she stopped at the first door on her left. Cautious about what this room might bring, she opened it slightly and peeked inside. The heady smell of roses in full bloom hit her and she opened the door wide, breathing in deeply. “Now this is more like it,” she whispered as she surveyed the room, searching for doors. “Ah, there it is.” She strolled through banks of roses, heading towards the door on her left, then stopped. “No, wait. One left, then two rights. I took my left coming into here. I need to go…”she pointed to her right, “there!”

A striped green door beckoned to her. The handle was unusual, shaped like an animal head. She bent down for a closer look. She gasped. It was a small gargoyle, not an animal. “I’m not sure I’m ready for this. Here goes nothing.” The door knob creaked as she turned it and the door squeaked as she pulled the door open.

To be continued…

  1. I missed a few episodes, but I have my own recent story about today’s: We got a test projector, which my husband installed. He accidentally changed the language, and because it was characters we didn’t know, we didn’t know how to change it back to English. I was pretty sure it was Greek, but even those characters looked kind of weird. Suddenly I had it: to make matters worse, the text was upside down!!!

  2. I have no sense of direction. I would have been doomed from the start. I don’t know who is going to find the other person but I would be willing to bet that Courtney will be the one solving this intricate puzzle. Alana ramblinwitham

  3. I love that door! My kitchen is a light green. I wonder what it would look like to paint the exterior door green stripes. I’m picturing vertical. I wouldn’t want a door to look fat…
I think I’d be taken aback, also, by a gargoyle door handle!
