Letter K

This is a serialized story – be sure to read in order: from A (afterthought) to Z (zealous).

After beating on the door until her hands hurt, and screaming till she was hoarse, Courtney stopped to consider her options. What she’d been doing wasn’t working, she needed to stop.

Taking a deep breath, she turned around and looked at her surroundings for the first time. A knot formed in her throat as she realized she was out. Out of that abominable nightmare of a building. Out into the real world. But where was she? She had recognized the area of town where she and Nash had started, but this place didn’t look at all familiar.

She took her time before deciding what to do next. She had to get back into that building so she could get Nash out. With that decision made, she started to walk the perimeter but found high walls on either edge of the current side of the structure.

Snapping her fingers she muttered, “Dummy! Use your cell phone.” Reaching for her belt bag, she found it unzipped and both her pistol and cell phone missing. Cussing under her breath, she turned to find a place to sit and everything went dark. She gasped, realizing someone had put something over her head and before she could do anything, her hands were restrained. Shouting at her captors brought no response so she quieted, listening to the sounds around her, hoping for a clue as to where they were taking her.

Silence, that was all she heard. Whoever they were, they never spoke. No other sounds were heard, not even their footsteps as they moved her. She concentrated, but had no clue as to what was going on, or where they were taking her.

Finally, they put her down and pushed her into a sitting position against a wall. She listened and hearing no sounds, she felt around her, trying to orient herself. Trying to find a way to remove her restraint and head covering. Then, there it was…a knife. That’s weird, she thought, as she managed to slice the tie around her hand and free her head. It took a minute for her vision to adjust.

“What the he—” She was back in the room where they had started.

To be continued…
