Back in the day (I’ve always wanted to say that), we had two choices when marking our spot while reading. We could bend the corner of the page (oh, the horror!).

Or we could use a bookmark.

Now there are bookmarks and there are BOOKmarks. I often used whatever was at hand. A torn envelope, a receipt found in the bottom of my purse, even a paper napkin or a piece of tissue. (No, I’ve never used money but some folks have…lol)

If you were lucky to have a hardback with a paper cover, it was easy to fold in the flap as a bookmark. Then there were books that came with an attached ribbon or other device to use as a bookmark.

Of course there were (and still are) commercial bookmarks. I still have a few even though I now rarely read a traditional book (hard or paperback).

I admit it, I’ve always been a bookmark collector. Souvenir stands, book stores, office supply shops – wherever there were bookmarks sold, I bought. And yes, I still have a few favorites. Mostly souvenir and ones made by my daughter for me. But there was a day when no bookmark was safe from my purchase!

The arrival of Post-it® notes meant a new breed of bookmarks was created. The makers noticed and started making note markers just for that purpose.

But Post-it® notes didn’t mark the end of bookmarks, oh no. E-books attempted that. Well, not completely. Students still need them for text books. And then there are the library books. Best to not turn the corners down in those books.

In fact, with all the craft sites on the Internet, you can find ways to make bookmarks out of just about anything these days, no matter how crafty you are or aren’t. Here are some sites to help…

I still drool over bookmarks when I see them but I now resist because I have no real use for them. Students still need them for text books. And there are library books, best to not turn the corners down in those books. LOL!

Got a favorite bookmark memory? What was your favorite bookmark? I have three. One is hand drawn and laminated by my daughter, one is a beautiful mountain landscape photograph of Montana and the last is a small hand-painted wooden one from Cartagena, Columbia (bought on our first cruise together).

  1. I collected bookmarks too. I finally cleaned them put the last time we moved but couldn’t get rid of all of them. I still read paper books and sometimes use my bookmarks, lol.
