A to Z of Small Delights, Simple Pleasures, & Significant Memories

Comforting Small Delights, Simple Pleasures, & Significant Memories…

  • Clean sheets: Is there anything more comforting in the entire world? Sigh…
  • Coffee brewing: The smell of coffee always makes me feel good.
  • Cousins: I grew up with nine cousins. I was the oldest and was close to two of them who were almost my age. So many adventures and we are still friends although we live far apart.
  • Ceiling fans: Comforting? For me, absolutely. I love the feeling of the air brushing over me, keeping me comfortable temperature-wise.
  • Colorful things: Most of my life was monotone. Not black & white, but safe colors. Working with the public as a professional, nothing outrageous was ever worn. Tailored classics. Once I retired, I broke out of my comfort zone with wild socks. Bright, cheerful, and silly. That has extended more into my wardrobe as I’ve ventured into colors I’d never have worn in my working years.
  • Clam chowder: New England, of course, not that red fake kind. Brings me back to my childhood.
  • Chimes: Not all chimes are comforting. I find glass and bamboo as well as ceramic chimes very jarring. But I have two metal chimes that sooth me every time I hear them. My first Woodstock chimes were purchased during a visit to the Adirondacks with my late husband. They finally fell apart and I lost the pieces so couldn’t get them repaired. I searched until I found what I was looking for and got the Earth and Pluto Woodstock chimes from Amazon. I love listening to them.

What are your comforting small delights, simple pleasures and significant memories?

  1. I LOVE good coffee. Vietnam has awesome coffee and I can never live anywhere else now. The classic “Saigon” style is with condensed milk and – usually – ice. My favorites are coconut coffee and salt (or salted, I’ve seen it both ways) coffee. Hubs favors egg coffee.

  2. Counting one’s blessings is essential. I concur with many of yours. We have similar chimes to yours, but ours are indoors – daft, really.

  3. Clean sheets are the best! Coffee – eh, I can take or leave it. Cousins are our first and best friends! And, I am definitely a colorful person – in my dress and the colors in my home.

  4. Definitely find coffee comforting, and clean sheets, dried outside, fresh off the line and put on the bed smell amazing and help me sleep deeper.
Christmas Carols, the traditional ones are comforting to me. I’m not a big celebrator of the holidays, but carols bring back the nostalgia of grandparents and childhood times when there were no stresses or worries. Just the joy of family and presents.

    1. Such sweet memories! I’m glad your Mum came to visit, hope you both are making some wonderful memories.

  5. Clean sheets, coffee is a must first thing in the morning. Clean clothes, colors in my home and clothes, cozy books because I love to read, ceiling fans to keep the air moving and cool and cookies because they are delicious.

    1. Ah yes, ceiling fans! A wonderful invention and we have them in all our rooms except the kitchen. Cookies & cozy books with some iced coffee while sitting on the porch under a ceiling fan (yes, we’ve had them outside, too). Nice!

  6. Love the clean sheets just not the folding. We get our coffee from a local roastery, Jim needed a low acid and their dark coffee is perfect for him. Cousin aplenty here! My mom was 6th of 6 and all had children and my grands had a house in a beach community where we would all go during the some and of course meet up every holiday. Ceiling fans are great, we even have 2 on the screened in porch. Always love colorful things esp. the rooster I just painted at my senior center class. I have chimes that sound very much like yours only mine are in my tv room so I can see it.

    1. I hated the folding so now I strip the bed, wash the sheets, and put them right back on! Why didn’t I think of this years ago. LOL!

  7. Your letters are very comforting, I was a sign writer for years and typography is still a passion. I concur with your choices too…

  8. Crisp Clean Cotton Sheets (the sheets my mother used). And unsalted butter. My mother only bought margarine but her mother always had whipped unsalted butter on the table. Those are just two memories. (I hope this comment gets to you; I had trouble logging into WordPress blogs both yesterday and today).

  9. Great list. For me perhaps an ideal would be to rise from clean comfy colorful sheets, and start my morning with a fabulous cup of coffee, listen to some chimes (yours are lovely indeed!) and do a bit of cloud watching. And later indulge in a piece of artisan chocolate.

  10. Coffee HAD to be on that list. Please add cinnamon rolls and cake, too!
Chimes can be super relaxing, almost hypnotizing.

  11. All of these are definitely comforting and pleasurable for me. Coffee is my biggest everyday pleasure. I don’t need it for the caffeine. I love the smell and the little ritual in the morning and time for myself.

I used to love New England clam chowder – one of the best foods from childhood. I’m vegan now so I make a vegan version that still satisfies.

    1. Another favorite chowder from childhood is corn chowder. You can make it without the bacon and it’s still flavorful. I haven’t made it in years.
