My contribution to this week’s Sunday Photo Fiction challenge:

I stood in the entrance to the minuscule waiting area, knowing I must enter but dreading it. Waiting was not something I did well. The only positive thing was the room was empty.

As soon as I had that thought, a large family pushed past me and filled the space. It felt like all the oxygen had been sucked out. Boisterous, rowdy, they were people who obviously knew nothing about inside voices.

I turned and ran, clutching my chest. I had to get outside, I had to breath. Pushing through the people in the hallway, I raced down the stairwell and out the basement parking level door.

As it slammed behind me, I closed my eyes and bent over, putting my hands on my knees as I tried to slow my breathing. Breathe in for five, hold for five, breath out for five. This mantra had helped me through these attacks many times.

When I felt back in control, I took a deep breath and raised. I counted to ten before opening my eyes.

I screamed. I was back inside that room and the walls were closing in on me.

    1. Thank you – I’m still undecided if she is physically or just mentally trapped in that room.

    1. Thanks, Tessa. Sometimes the 200 words can be quite a challenge.
