It had been a rough season, rougher than normal. No time for maintenance, no time for anything but the most critical repairs. Of course that meant more money for the owners of the ski resort, not that they ever put much of it back into the equipment. Nope, they lined their wallets with the profits.

The off-season maintenance crew stood back and surveyed the old chair lift. It had been in operation since the 1970s, taking all the ingenuity their foreman could muster to keep it going.

Now it looked like a train wreck, wooden chairs were scattered at the top where they seem to have crashed. Or maybe they just got tired and stopped there for a rest, allowing the others to crash into them.

“Can we fix it this time, boss?” asked one of the workers.

The foreman scratched his head. “Not sure, but I doubt it.” He looked at the others. “Anyone got a bright idea? I’m open to suggestions.”

Simultaneously, all of the crew flipped open the shiny Zippo wind-proof lighters he had gifted them for the holidays.

  1. Sometimes the most practical solution is the best. It says something though about those who line their pockets instead of taking care of their property…
