Today’s snippet is from Paradise Dawn, the prequel to the C’Mon Inn B&B mystery series. Starting in the current era, the twin Thompson sisters, Betsy and Anna, reminisce with friends during a hurricane on the island of Kauai about how they ended up on Hawaii. The story goes from the era of Vietnam to the present when the three main C’Mon Inn books are set.

Detective Alika Powell knew it wasn’t going to be a good day. First, on her way to work she’d spilled a full cup of coffee down the front of her blouse. All thanks to the car in front of her slamming on their brakes. They’d avoided hitting the dog, but her coffee committed suicide on her lap. Once she made it to the office, she learned about three more SPAM® heists at local stores.

This is ridiculous. A dozen SPAM® thefts this week? Don’t people have anything better to do?” She snorted as she passed the paperwork back to Desk Sergeant Joe Mahoe. “Put Tomatoa on this.”

Sure thing, Detective Powell.” He tried to not stare at the coffee on her shirt. “Should I contact the Quartermaster for a clean, um, dry shirt for you?”

She laughed. “Thanks. I’ve got spares in the office.”

Did you hear about the movie they’re shooting at Ha‘ena State Park?”

She absentmindedly pulled her reading glasses out of her purse, then put them back. She brushed her wiry curls back into place. “I know they got the approval to start working there. Why?” She knew him well enough to recognize he had more to say.

Well, it appears they found some bones when they were digging over there.”

Her interest was piqued. “Human bones?”

He shrugged. “Could be. They sent some over to the Medical Examiner.”

Keep me updated.” She strode towards her office. It wasn’t going to be a good day. All this before nine in the morning plus a hurricane headed in their direction. Nope, not a good day at all.
