Today’s snippet is from Paradise Dead, book two in the C’Mon Inn Mystery Series.
She stared at the thick envelope, reading and rereading the return address. Nothing good ever comes from certified letters. Especially when it comes from a lawyer’s office. She shook her head as she slid a finger under the flap. Here goes nothing. She took a deep breath, pulling out the paperwork and flattening it on the table in front of her.
She let out the breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. It was a copy of her ex – no – her late husband’s will. Divorced for a dozen years, Bobbi Cameron and Sean MacIntyre had remained friends. Not just for the sake of the twins, now eighteen, but because they genuinely liked each other. They just weren’t good as partners in life and they both admitted it. He’d made her the executor of his estate back when they’d divorced, realizing his cruise ship lifestyle put him at risk of an accidental death.
Sucks you died in your own bed. You always wanted to die while on one of your cruise ships. She shook her head, unable to clear the vision of them together when they were young. And of a heart attack of all things. I figured a jealous spouse would do you in.
She sighed and turned back to the will. She scanned through the first two pages. No real surprises. He’d provided for her and the twins, ensuring they had funds for college and the mortgage on their house would be paid off via a life insurance policy. It was the third page that gave her pause and made her laugh.
I always knew you loved them more than me. Looks like you’re getting the band back together, even from your deathbed.
She set the paper aside and thought back through the years. He’d been a better father than husband, albeit one who was rarely around. The twins idolized him and she never abused that notion. He’d brought back trinkets, treasures and tall tales from his travels around the world. He’d been to every continent but Africa during his early years, doing what he loved most, playing saxophone while traveling on cruise ships.
That was where they’d met. She’d been a singer and dancer and he’d been in the house band. Two years later they married. They knew keeping the same tours wouldn’t last and within three months of tying the knot, they were placed on different ships, just in time for her to find out she was expecting. Having the twins forced her early retirement but Sean continued working the cruises.
Thank you.
