Today’s snippet is from Mocha & Melodies, a companion novella to the Red Line Coffee Mysteries.

The door opened, letting in the bright hallway light. “Ugh! Close the door, you’re blinding me.”

Desiree laughed. “You always have to be so dramatic!”

What? Me? You’re the dramatic one,” Jodi countered. She plopped backwards on the other bed, propping her feet up against the wall. “You finish your call home?”

Yup. Not much news there.”

How did your friend react? She’s kinda your ex-sister-in-law, right?”

Jodi nodded. “And she got me the job at the Red Line Coffee Shop, too. I don’t know why she and my brother broke up. I was too busy with high school. I’m glad they stayed friends.”

So, what did she have to say about my roomie and THE EVENT?”

She was a bit stunned and more than ready to come and help. I told her there was no need. I made her promise not to tell my brother, though. There’s no way he wouldn’t show up and try to muscle into the investigation.”

Huh. Sounds like they both like to be in the middle of the action?”

Yeah. Kinda explains their career choices in fire and police, doesn’t it.”

Maybe that’s why they split up? They were both controlling, action-oriented people?’

Jodi shrugged. “Like I said, I’m not sure. But that does make sense.”

What do you make of all this? I wish they would tell us how she died. I hate not knowing what’s going on.” Desiree flipped around and sat on the edge of the bed.

Jodi rolled onto her side and propped her head up on her elbow. “They didn’t make a big deal of the donuts with me, just the coffee. Guess that’s because I bought it.” She bolted upright. “Hey! Did you notice a coffee cup from the coffee truck in your room when we found Cyndi?”

Um, I kinda fainted, remember? I didn’t see anything but the body on the floor.”

I wish we could get back into the room. We might find some clues that were missed.”

You don’t think Frick and Frack were thorough? I mean, they did call in the crime scene techs.”

You’d be surprised what can be missed. Sometimes it’s the most obvious things. Things that others wouldn’t realize were important.”

Well, we can’t. They have the room barricaded with crime scene tape.”

And yet, they haven’t declared it a crime scene. At least, not officially.” Jodi stroked her chin in an attempt to look mysterious, and Dizzy did the same, causing them both to collapse in laughter.
